Contained in the ancient past of Hawaii is a polytheistic religion with an intricate hierarchy of gods and goddesses. Six gods and two goddesses were believed to comprise a heavenly body. Keawe is the name of the primary god. Keawe was believed to be present at the genesis of creation, and the ancestor of all gods and goddesses. The jurisdiction of deities was divided by region as well as occupation, and rituals accorded strenuously with such particularities. Hawaiian polytheism persisted through the reign of King Kamehameha, the first ruler to unite the islands of Hawaii and put an end to inter-island warfare. King Kamehameha died in 1819.
